Dirac is an open source, royalty-free compression system using wavelets, developed by the BBC. Dirac supports a low-bit rate profile for streaming and video distribution and also a professional intra-coding profile, Dirac Pro, for television production and post-production. Dirac Pro is being standardised through the SMPTE as VC-2. This article gives an overview of the Dirac Pro/VC-2 compression system and how it can be used to unify production compression systems, improve quality and reduce costs.
