Despite the limited availability of native high definition (HD) content, broadcasters throughout Europe are rapidly launching HD services. In this environment, the delivery of HD content necessarily relies on some amount of up-conversion of standard definition (SD) material. Though broadcasters continue their investment in HD infrastructures, the need for upconversion will remain an issue as long as SD sources and archives play a role in HD production. The article describes a solution for using SD material in an HD broadcast facility.

Angesichts dieser Ausgangssituation – ohne Inhalte kein Programm – sind die Sendeanstalten förmlich dazu gezwungen, vorhandenes SD-Material in HD zu konvertieren. Trotz der Tatsache, dass die Sender Zug um Zug in HD-Infrastruktur investieren, wird die Notwendigkeit für Aufwärts-Konvertierung solange bestehen, wie die Sendeanstalten SD-Material einsetzen müssen.
