While holographic recording is in the future for the consumer domain, the 4th generation of optical storage is being heralded by a leap in technology. Within the EUREKA project MobileDRIVE and the project 4GOOD (4th-Generation Omni-purpose Optical Disc-system), funded by the BMWi, the fundamental technologies are being developed for high-density data storage, an optical drive system, an optical disc and a concept of inherent copy protection. Another focus is on the miniaturisation of both drive and disc . The contribution describes the technology objectives, the challenges, concepts and the project status.

Generation optischer Datenspeicher an. Im Rahmen des EUREKA-Projektes MobileDRIVE bzw. des vom BMWi geförderten Projekts 4GOOD (4th-Generation,Omni-purpose Optical Discsystem) werden die Basistechniken für hochdichte Datenspeicherung, ein optisches Laufwerkssystem, eine optische Speicherdisc und ein Konzept für inhärenten Kopierschutz entwickelt. Die Miniaturisierung des Laufwerks und der Disc sind dabei ein Schwerpunkt. Der Beitrag beschreibt die technischen Ziele, Herausforderungen, Ansätze und den Entwicklungsstand des Projektes.
