Division of labor is part of economic life. The story goes back 100 years to the early automotive plants, when assembly-lines displaced craftsmen who had once built cars almost single-handedly. It also applies to today’s broadcasting market, where over-the-top (OTT) video providers are shifting from all-in-one systems to best-of-breed solutions. In this scenario, based upon modular components, interoperability becomes paramount. And given that these systems depend upon software, interoperability is largely a function of application programming interfaces (APIs), the building blocks in today’s “app” economy.
