Now, that the introduction of HDTV is completed, there is the question what will be the coming format. During the latest exhibitions new devices with a fourfold resolution of that of HDTV were shown and in 2020 a format with a resolution of 16 times HDTV is predicted. But is the viewer able to see the higher resolution? Even 1080p/50 is a format with higher resolution compared to today’s broadcast formats. To reduce the datarate needed for such a system, a higher efficiency coding is necessary – HEVC. Even a future autostereoscopic 3DTV format without glasses needs a display technology with higher resolution.

Aber welche wahrnehmbaren Vorteile bringen diese Formate für den Zuschauer? Auch 1080p/50 ist im Vergleich zu dem heute gesendeten HDTV bereits ein höher aufgelöstes Format. Um die Datenrate nicht zu sehr zu vergrößern, muss hierbei ein effektiveres Codierverfahren verwendet werden – HEVC – und zukünftige autostereoskopische 3 DTV-Formate ohne Brille benötigen ebenfalls ein Display mit höherer Auflösung.
