‘Live Staging ofMedia Events’ is an integrated project funded by the European Union. Its purpose is to develop innovative content formats and digital technologies to improve TV broadcasting of live events. To evaluate the results achieved over more than two years of research, the LIVE project performed a field trial in Austria with about 500 invited IPTV customers during the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. For six days, LIVE’s partner (ORF) and a team of researchers produced an interactive multi-channel live TV programme designed to provide an enhanced viewing experience. This article starts with an introduction to the conceptual approach and the technical platform. It concludes with a presentation of the field trial and its results.
