Everyone is familiar with these situations: In a detective story, a police investigator interrogates a suspect, accompanied by suspenseful background music. Unfortunately, the music makes the conversation dicult to understand. Or in sports broadcasts, the commentator often drowns out the stadium atmosphere, which some people would rather like to hear. Broadcasters have to deal with these and similar requests again and again. What is lacking is a possibility for the viewer to individually adjust the sound. The MPEG-H TV Audio System, which was mainly developed by the Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen, is intended to remedy this situation. In addition to enveloping D sound, it also oers new forms of interactivity for the viewer. The format has already been included in the ATSC . and DVB standards and has been in regular broadcasting operation of the world‘s first terrestrial UHDTV service in South Korea since May . However, MPEG-H Audio is not only a new audio codec, it is a complete system from the microphone to the loudspeaker and opens up new design possibilities for creative minds as well as a new world of sound for the audience.

Leider wird das Gespräch durch die Musik aber schwer verständlich. Oder bei Sportübertragungen übertönt der Kommentator oftmals die Stadionatmosphäre, die so mancher aber lieber hören würde. Mit diesen und ähnlichen Wünschen müssen sich Rundfunkanstalten immer wieder beschäftigen. Was fehlt ist eine Möglichkeit für den Zuschauer, den Ton individuell einzustellen. Das MPEG-H TV Audio System, das maßgeblich vom Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen entwickelt wurde, soll hier Abhilfe schaen. Es bietet – neben einhüllendem D-Klang – auch neue Formen der Interaktivität für den Zuschauer. Das Format wurde bereits in die ATSC .- und DVB-Standards aufgenommen und ist seit Mai in Südkorea im regulären Sendebetrieb des weltweit ersten terrestrischen UHDTV-Services. Doch MPEG-H Audio ist nicht nur ein neuer Audiocodec, es ist vielmehr ein komplettes System vom Mikrofon bis zum Lautsprecher und eröffnet neue Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten für Kreative sowie eine neue Klangwelt für die Zuschauer.
