The transition from film to digital media represents the most radical change in the cinema industry since the introduction of the sound film by Warner Brothers some 80 years ago. The replacement of 35 mm film by digital files confronts technology suppliers, film producers, lenders, cinemas and all other members of the valuecreation chain with new challenges. Standards have to be developed and established, cost structures changed and high initial investments recouped. At the same time, the home theatre experience is getting more sophisticated and illegal distribution structures place questions over the profitability of existing business models. The Digital Cinema Initative (DCI) seeks to give a universal answer by specifying the properties of tomorrow’s digital cinema technology, including details of Digital Rights Management (DRM). This article discusses the concepts deployed, where pros and cons can be identified, and whether the DCI approach can achieve its goals.

Die Ablösung des 35-mm-Films durch digitale Dateien stellt Technikanbieter, Filmproduzenten, Verleiher, Kinos und alle anderen Mitglieder der Verwertungskette vor neue Herausforderungen: Standards müssen entwickelt und etabliert werden, Kostenstrukturen verschieben sich, und hohe Anfangsinvestitionen wollen amortisiert werden. Zugleich stellen die Aufrüstung des Heimkinos und illegale Vertriebsstrukturen die Rentabilität bestehender Verwertungsmodelle in Frage. Mit der durchgängigen Digitalisierung des Kinos und der Integration von digitalem Rechtemanagement (DRM) will die von den großen Hollywoodstudios getragene Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) eine universelle Antwort auf die Frage nach der Zukunft des Kinos geben.
