1080p/50 is the next step forward in digital and IT-based HDTV production. A master format based on a progressive signal standard is obviously preferable to multiple HDTV formats. Highquality productions can then be produced and archived in thatmaster format. A time frame for the introduction of 1080p/50 as a production standard depends on professional users and manufacturers. EBU working group SP-HIPS will release neutral findings to inform all EBU members. In the area of 1080p/50 distribution, political implementation concerns are more challenging than technical issues. The advantages offered to consumers include different options such as downloads, Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) and, in the long run, 3D.

In welchem Zeitrahmen das 1080p/50-Format als Produktionsformat eingeführt wird, hängt von den professionellen Anwendern und den Herstellern ab. Die EBU-Arbeitsgruppe SP-HIPS wird dazu richtungweisende Arbeiten durchführen, um die EBUMitglieder neutral und umfassend zu informieren. Im Bereich der 1080p/50-Ausstrahlung sind weniger die technischen Herausforderungen zu meistern als die politischen Implikationen. Neben dem Mehrwert für den Konsumenten lassen sich eventuell Synergien mit anderen Optionen, wie zum Beispiel Downloads und HbbTV sowie langfristig 3DTV generieren.
