Steven Bilow: Reducing the immense expense of producing live events, while retaining production quality, has long been a goal for media producers and organizations. Transporting large teams and equipment to remote locations is not only enormously expensive, it also creates an unsustainable carbon footprint. Historically, media companies have been risk-averse and reluctant to deviate from tried and trusted methods, often until forced to do so by external events. In much the same way as the earthquake and tsunami of 2011 which damaged Sony’s video tape factory accelerated the industry to move away from video tape, the Covid 19 pandemic has motivated producers to adopt new technology innovations and working practices for remote production.
